On a Wednesday morning a few weeks ago I pulled into the Temple parking lot.  It was only 8:30 and yet there were few parking spots to be had.  It took me a moment to realize why the lot was so full on a Wednesday morning.  We were not holding services nor was I late for a tour.  It was food distribution day from our food bank.

I was a big fan of Andy Rooney.  He always seemed to know how to communicate the little irritations of life in a particularly interesting way.  I liked the fact that he was a curmudgeon.  He brought many a smile to my face over the years.  His cantankerous nature made him memorable.  Did I love to hear Andy Rooney begin his segment with, “Don’t you hate it when….?”

I love stories.  By now everyone knows this about me.  For me a good sermon is just an opportunity to link some of my favorite stories together, all with a connecting thread of some kind.  I like Yiddish stories. I love Chasidic tales.  I am always excited when I discover a story from the Talmud or read a story from the Midrash. Stories just tell it best.

My mother has not been feeling very well this summer. She was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in June.Walking has been particularly difficult and excruciatingly painful. I flew to New Hampshire to spend a few days with her a couple of weeks ago.
